Presenter: Dr. Jesse Frank, D.O. (retired) | Ohio Health

Dr. Frank graduated from the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1988 and began his family medicine practice in Marengo, Ohio, in July 1989. He is board certified in Osteopathic Family Medicine with added qualifications in Hospice and Palliative Medicine. When he earned his certification in Hospice and Palliative Medicine in 2001, he was among the first 1,000 physicians in the nation to achieve this distinction.

He previously served as the medical director for both the Morrow County and Knox County hospice organizations and practiced as an emergency room physician at Morrow County Hospital for 18 years. Before his retirement on July 18, 2025, Dr. Frank helped establish the palliative medicine service at OhioHealth Doctors Hospital, where he provided inpatient palliative care for nine years.

Description: This presentation will provide an overview of the resources available to support guardians, social workers, and attorneys in understanding and applying Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) protocols for their clients. The presentation will also explain the different types of DNR orders in the State of Ohio, their legal implications, and how they are implemented across various care settings.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify where to access information regarding Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) protocols in Ohio.
  2. Explain what actions are permitted and prohibited under the DNR Comfort Care (DNRCC) and DNR Comfort Care–Arrest (DNRCC-Arrest) protocols.
  3. Describe who has the authority to change a DNR status and under what circumstances it may be changed.
  4. Identify the required form used to document and declare an individual’s DNR status.
